The activity support project for the disabled is the project that accounts for the largest portion of the government’s budget for support for the disabled. As activity support services for the disabled are expanded, the demand for ‘activity support workers for the disabled’ is also rapidly increasing.
Unlike nursing assistants, it is not easy to obtain a license through an exam, but rather to obtain a work license after completing a certain amount of training and practice, so the entry barrier is lower than in other occupations.
Of course, it is not easy to assist people with physical or mental disabilities. The government is also considering this and is making efforts to increase the hourly wage of activity support workers for the disabled, so we can expect improvements in treatment in the future. Today, we will learn about the method of obtaining a disability activity support worker license, training institutions, salary, and work.
‘Activity support workers for the disabled’ are personnel who assist the daily life and social life of people with physical or mental disabilities, thereby improving their quality of life and helping them live independently and participate in society. They are people who have completed the relevant training course at an activity support worker training institution.
In order to obtain the qualification of a disabled activity support worker, you must apply for training directly at a designated training institution and complete the training course.
Nursing care workers, social workers, nurses, and nursing assistants can receive a discount of 8 hours of training time (2 practical subjects). If you have participated in a care project funded by the central government or local government, such as a child care worker or a home care assistant, for more than 360 hours in the past year, you are recognized as a ‘person with similar experience’ and will receive a discount of 8 hours of training time.
Those who have completed only theoretical and practical training will only be issued a ‘certificate of completion of the relevant training’, and you must complete the field training to receive an ‘activity support worker training completion certificate’.
If you apply for training at an activity support institution rather than an educational institution, the activity support institution may send a letter of recommendation to the educational institution to link you to the training. If there is an activity support institution you would like to work at, we recommend that you contact them in advance and complete the training.
You must pay all of the training costs yourself. The standard training cost is 150,000 won. If you are exempted from 8 hours of education (caregiver, social worker, nurse, nursing assistant, similar career), it does not exceed 120,000 won. The training fee includes the practical training fee.
This is the unit price of the activity support service for the disabled in 2024. It has increased by 3.7% compared to last year. However, the salary is not determined based on this amount. The Ministry of Health and Welfare recommends that at least 75% of the salary cost be used as the wages of activity support personnel, so the actual hourly wage given to activity support workers is at least 12,110 won per hour. In order to secure more activity support workers, the hourly wage conditions are different even within activity support organizations, so please carefully check the salary conditions before choosing an activity support organization.
Activity support services for the disabled are largely divided into three types (▲activity assistance, ▲home bathing, ▲home nursing). Let’s take a look at the activity assistance service, which is the most common. Activity support workers for the disabled visit the homes of the disabled person they are matched with to provide physical activities, housework, social activities, and other services. There are some people who misunderstand that disabled activity support workers are housekeepers for disabled families. The service provided by activity support workers does not include housework support for family members other than the disabled person. However, if the matched disabled person or the disabled person’s spouse is within 6 months of giving birth, housework support can be provided as an exception. Home bathing service and home nursing service can only be provided by activity support personnel with certain qualifications such as nursing assistants and nurses and activity support organizations.
You can search for local educational institutions and training schedules on the ‘Activity Support for the Disabled’ website operated by the ‘National Pension Service’. If you set the search area to ‘Seoul’ and click the ‘Search’ button, a list of ‘9 total’ educational institutions will appear. You can also check the training schedules for each institution on the website.
We learned about the role of the disabled activity support worker, how to obtain the qualification, and salary. If you have completed the activity support worker training course, you can go to a local activity support organization, sign an employment contract, and be matched with a disabled beneficiary to provide services.
