If your PC is running slowly or is displaying an “out of memory” error message, your PC may need more memory. Or are you simply curious about what your PC specs are? Learn how to check RAM in Windows 10.
(Please note that the method for checking RAM on a Mac is different and beyond the scope of this tutorial.)

Random Access Memory (RAM) plays an important role in your computer and is a fast memory type of short-term storage that your computer uses to hold data that is in use. This short-term storage is used by all applications running on your computer, such as your browser or word processor. RAM is freed when you shut down your computer. RAM is different from a hard disk drive or solid state drive, which permanently stores files and applications.

How to check RAM in Windows 10 operating system is simple. The following steps given below will allow you to find out how much memory was recently installed.

First, click on the ‘Start’ menu on the left at the bottom of the screen.

Then, type “Windows specifications” and press Enter to get the correct result.

A window named ‘Information’ will appear. Use the navigation bar on the right side of the window to scroll down until you see an entry labeled ‘Device Specifications’.

Find the item that says ‘Installed RAM’. This item indicates the amount of RAM recently installed in your PC.
If you want to know how much RAM your computer is using when it crashes, you can check the ‘Windows Task Manager’.

Many newer computers are sold preloaded with 8GB of RAM. Some high-end computers, such as gaming computers, come with 16GB or more of RAM pre-installed. In general, the more RAM your computer has, the better it’s ability to handle multitasking (the ability to run multiple programs at the same time and switch between them).
However, not everyone needs large amounts of RAM, or not everyone has a computer that can take advantage of large amounts of RAM. One of the ways to check RAM capacity and usage in Windows 10 is to use the ‘Windows Task Manager’. To find memory usage in Windows Task Manager, please follow the steps below.

If you follow one of these three methods in Windows 10, you will see a graph showing the current performance and usage of your RAM. If the graph shows that your RAM usage is over 70%, but you are only running simple tasks or doing nothing, you may need to add RAM to prevent slow performance. However, sometimes too many programs are running in the background and the task manager shows high RAM usage.

After checking your memory usage, think about how much RAM your computer needs.

If you’ve checked the amount of RAM installed and task manager has determined that you need more RAM, the process of finding compatible memory for your system is relatively simple. Depending on whether you want to upgrade the RAM of your laptop or desktop, your options will vary.
The Crucial System Scanner is an easy-to-use tool that gets your PC system-wide information from the BIOS, then finds compatible upgradeable memory on Crucial.com. You can find information about this tool and how it works in the video below.
