The KC certification mark is a national integrated certification mark that has been integrated since July 1, 2009, from 13 statutory certification marks previously granted by five ministries, including the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Environment, Korea Communications Commission, and National Emergency Management Agency. It is a certification body for each ministry. In order to eliminate the inconvenience and increase international reliability, the statutory mandatory certification systems for safety, health, environment, and quality that were previously used were unified. Certification is carried out through rigorous procedures including manufacturing, inspection equipment and raw materials, process inspection, and product inspection, and follow-up management is also provided through regular product testing and factory confirmation. Did you know that some small home appliances are still being distributed despite recalls and certification cancellations? According to the Korea Consumer Agency, seven of the small home appliances that have had their certification canceled, such as electric mats and electric steamers, are available for purchase. It is said that some electrical appliances that have had their KC certification canceled or have not received certification because they do not meet the safety standards set by the government are being distributed on the market, so we need to be more careful, right?

The reason why products that do not meet safety standards are distributed on the market is because manufacturers and importers sometimes do not take action, such as discontinuing sales, even after being notified by the relevant organizations of the cancellation of certification. In addition, even though manufacturers and importers are aware of this fact and have taken measures such as discontinuing sales, there are cases where distributors do not recognize the seriousness of the problem and continue to sell products for the purpose of depleting inventory. Accordingly, the Korea Consumer Agency is making efforts to prevent product safety accidents by continuously monitoring the distribution of illegal and defective products, including canceled products.

The way to check KC certification is to use websites such as the Product Safety Information Center and the National Radio Research Agency. The place to check the KC certification number of electrical products and children’s products is the Product Safety Information Center (Safety Korea.kr). After accessing the site, click Information Disclosure, Certification Information Search, and search for the model name of the device. and certification status, recall status, etc. In addition, the place to look up the KC certification number for electromagnetic wave certification for IT devices is the National Radio Research Institute. Go to the business information, click on the conformity assessment system, and check the certification by searching the conformity assessment status. Additionally, it is a type of quality assurance document that inspects and certifies whether a company is producing standardized products. The Korean Standards Association is the place to evaluate the quality of products and look up KS certification, which is granted to products that reach a certain level. Please refer to this!

Electrical appliances must be consumed safely!

Safety certification is even more important for electrical appliances because consumers can cause accidents such as fire and electric shock. ‘KC Certification’ was created to determine whether it can protect people, animals, and devices from risks such as electric shock, fire, and explosion. In order to safely consume electrical appliances, it is first necessary to raise safety awareness among business operators and consumers regarding the distribution of products whose safety certification has been revoked. Also, when purchasing home appliances, check the KC certification mark and certification cancellation, check the KC certification number, and check if the product has been recalled (Happy Dream (consumer.go.kr), Product Safety Information Center (SafetyKorea.kr)).
