Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant in the body and is a nutrient that performs a variety of functions, including forming collagen to build body tissue and assisting in the absorption of iron in the small intestine. It is an essential nutrient that must be consumed through food because it cannot be produced in the body. .

Vitamin C megatherapy refers to the method of administering an injection or taking it as a supplement in an amount that is 100 to 200 times more than the recommended daily intake of 100 mg for adults.

When consuming more than 200 mg of vitamin C per day, the absorption rate is lowered and excretion through urine increases. In particular, when consuming more than 1000 mg, the absorption rate is lowered to less than 50%, so a constant concentration of vitamin C is always maintained in the body. Therefore, even if you take vitamin C as a supplement, your blood vitamin C concentration will not increase as much as expected. Additionally, when vitamin C is administered by injection, the concentration of vitamin C in the blood is higher than when taken orally, but additional research is needed to determine its effectiveness.

Although it is receiving a lot of attention in relation to cancer treatment, in fact, when 100 patients with advanced colorectal cancer were given 1000 mg of vitamin C, no effect was found on cancer progression or survival rate, and other studies also showed no effect on cancer patients’ symptoms or performance. No beneficial effects were found on performance, appetite, body weight, or survival rate.

It has been reported that osmotic diarrhea, gastrointestinal disorders, nausea, vomiting, and renal stone formation may occur depending on the individual when vitamin C is consumed in high doses, more than 1000 mg per day. Therefore, when taking vitamin C supplements, you need to be careful not to exceed the daily upper limit of 2000 mg or more, and especially if you have decreased kidney function, are on dialysis, or have weakened gastrointestinal function.

The recommended daily vitamin C intake for Korean adults over 19 years of age is 100 mg. For pregnant women, it is recommended to consume 110mg of vitamin C to supply a sufficient amount of vitamin C to the fetus, and lactating women are also recommended to consume 135mg due to milk secretion. For smokers, it is recommended to increase intake to 130 mg as many results show that oxidative stress is higher and vitamin C nutritional status is lower than that of non-smokers.

Normally, the recommended daily intake of vitamin C for adults, 100 mg, can be met by consuming only 1-2 commonly eaten fruits or 70-150 g of fresh vegetables. In fact, according to the 2010 National Health Survey, most people are consuming more than the recommended intake, indicating that it is not enough. It turned out that it wasn’t.

In addition, the antioxidant and anti-cancer effects that people expect are greater when the antioxidants and dietary fiber contained in various vegetables and fruits are taken together rather than when only one nutrient is taken as a supplement, so eat a balanced diet including a variety of vegetables. It is recommended that you consume fruit at least once a day.
